Ways to address
‘To what extent/ How far’ Qn
Eg
• In the final sentence, the author writes that
‘by giving up all claims to individual freedom,
we will discover the best way to achieve it.’
• How far do you agree with his view? How
free do you want to be? (2006)
Usual response:
• I agree with the writer to a small/large extent.
In the final sentence, the author writes that ‘by giving up
all claims to individual freedom, we will discover the best
way to achieve it.’
Notice absolute in the question
Some ways of writing a response to qn
• I do not think at all that a person can achieve
freedom by surrendering all claims to freedom.
• I find it difficult to agree with the writer’s view at all.
• There are very few situations where I think that
surrendering all claims to individual freedom could
guarantee that I enjoy freedom.
• I agree with the writer entirely.
I agree with his analysis of the causes of the
gender revolution but I do not agree with his
reasons and solutions to the conflict.
• I agree that the causes he identified are valid but
I do not think these adequately explain for the
gender revolution…. (elaborate, explain with
evaluation) … Introducing gender education in
school would not resolve the conflict of the
gender revolution which the writer claimed
would…
Advantages: Precise – helps you focus your
next part of the question.
Problem: If you don’t know the text well enough
nor the Qn – you can’t be this precise.
Think about where you are according to
the AQ marking guide:
Does your answer:
• Tends to be a mere summary or restatement
of the text rather than an evaluation of it.
• Explanation shows limited relevance and
development of ideas.
• Evaluation is not very convincing and tends
to be superficial with limited development of
ideas.
• Explanation is not as thorough as in the top
band.
Reminders
• Identify the question/issue which you
need to address – pay attention to the
preamble.
• Choose text references which address
the issue – relevance – you need min 1
from each text.
• Evaluate text reference .
• Own examples and apply to larger
society
• Use key words in question.
