Example

Issue: … recycling … the answer

‘Answer’ (paraphrased): solution, offers opportunities, new perspectives, suitable alternatives, alleviate, overcome, keep from becoming a serious problem, prevent

Topic Sentence

Recycling is often perceived by environmentalists to be the answer to our environmental concerns as it appears to be the most cost-effective alternative available.

Justification

- Does not require the exploitation of the Earth’s natural resources, eg. virgin trees need not be cut down to make paper
- The potential to encourage those that are poor who need an income to search for and provide items for recycling, eg. aluminium drink cans, in return for a small payment is high so manpower costs involved can be kept low
- Cheaper to recycle than to look for new sources of raw materials such mining areas for metal ores
- Cheaper to recycle than source for and develop new landfills
- Recycled products usually cheaper than non-recycled ones

Counter-Argument/Limitation

- Cost of collection, transportation and processing fee for large amounts of recycled items may not justify the cost savings.
- Need to provide for and maintain recycling bins all around the country may be costly, i.e. it’s not a one-off investment since bins may be damaged or vandalized.
- The recycling process requires the use of more energy than it saves
